St. Guilhelm le Désert

The Abbey was founded by William of Orange, cousin of Charlemagne,
in 804 for his retirement as a monk after a lifetime fighting against islam.
It soon became a centre for pilgrims.

Today the Abbey and the village surrounding it is a major tourist attraction,
yet still manages to retain a certain serenity. You can climb the hill
to an old ruined castle or follow the gorges of the river Herault

St. Guilhelm is about an hour's drive from Montblanc
